MOT-75-12.00 VECP

E.L. Robinson Engineering redesigned the foundations for two large bridges over the Great Miami River in Dayton and proposed a value engineering change proposal for Kokosing Construction Company and their client, ODOT District 7. The original plans called for supporting the bridge on driven 14-inch diameter pipe piles with a capacity of 140 tons. ELR considered 40 different combinations of pile diameters, wall thicknesses, and pile hammers to determine the optimal foundation design for the given site conditions and pile drivability. From those combinations, ELR then selected 40 different combinations to evaluate in depth, resulting in a selection of a 16-inch diameter pipe pile with a ½-inch wall thickness and a pile capacity of 325 tons. The piles were driven with an APE D36-26 diesel hammer. Instrumented static load tests and dynamic load tests were used during construction to evaluate the foundations and refine the final design.
