The Award Winning Dodridge Street Bridge

E.L. Robinson's Dodridge Street Bridge has won many awards from professional organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, Women's Transportation Seminar, Association for Bridge Construction & Design, and the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. This bridge, which appears to be a slender, single-span concrete bridge, is actually a three-span bridge with hidden end spans. The short end spans are restrained by rock anchor tiedowns at each abutment to provide stability, and the concrete tub girders were post-tensioned in stages as the dead load was applied, allowing the girders to function as continuous beams. Achieving this delicate balance wasn’t easy, as the construction of this bridge required a careful sequencing of the post-tensioning and tie-down forces to ensure the tub girders were stable throughout all stages of construction and not over stressed.
